Tikka Banda is a roaming street band, performing at events, festivals, parades and creative productions, often right amongst the audience. The expectation is simple: adapt, perform and keep the energy moving. Our repertoire is recognisable, contemporary and crowd-pleasing. And yes, we sometimes play ‘Fiesta’ and ‘Coronation’ too, just not often enough for you to get fed up of them. When they do come out, our tone, projection, articulation and dynamics make them feel different.

What you get on this side of the door

If musicians are expected to perform professionally, the environment should make sense too.

• Rehearsals take place in an air-conditioned, centrally located space with parking available.
• Our summer uniform includes branded attire, Bermuda shorts and comfortable sneakers; coordinated, practical and built for Malta.
• And when Malta finally decides to cool down, we are covered there too. For winter outdoor events, our branded gear includes hoodies, neck warmers and jackets, keeping the look consistent without expecting musicians to freeze for the sake of it.
• Most gigs run from 30 minutes to 1 hour, 1 to 1.5 hours, or up to 2 hours, with anything longer treated as a customised performance. Shorter does not necessarily mean less rewarding. In many cases, what you earn can still work out better than spending three hours sweating through a longer engagement.

The people matter too

Strong playing matters. So does being a decent person to work with. We have had egos bigger than the instruments carrying them and personalities that made teamwork harder than it needed to be. They are no longer part of Tikka Banda. We value musicians who are grounded, reliable and easy to work with.

Our performer pool has three levels.

• CORE TEAM is for musicians who want Tikka Banda to form a more regular part of their performing calendar, with stronger availability, greater familiarity with the repertoire and more regular involvement in rehearsals and performances. In return, Core Team members receive priority access to top-rated requests, selected exclusive bookings and enhanced remuneration rates. Greater commitment comes with greater access.
• FIXED RELIEVERS are musicians who provide structured cover when a Core Team member has a justified unavailability, while also supporting instruments or positions that are not part of our regular setup. They are expected to stay familiar with the repertoire and with how Tikka Banda operates, so they can step in properly – not arrive asking what tune we are playing.
• AVAILABILITY-BASED MUSICIANS are for those who want to work with Tikka Banda but cannot offer regular availability, giving them more flexibility while still being considered for suitable performances and projects. More flexible? Yes. Optional commitment? No. Second-class option? Definitely not.

Why auditions?

We want to know who we are working with before putting someone into a Tikka Banda performance. We have engaged musicians in the past whose performances did not meet the standard expected, and we are not repeating that mistake. Time costs money for everyone. A professional rate comes with a professional expectation. The audition works both ways: we hear what you can bring, and you decide whether Tikka Banda is right for you.
